At the other end of the spectrum is an impeccably preserved Crucifixion of ca. 1360 by Andrea Bonaiuti, best known for his magnificent frescoes at Santa Maria Novella in Florence. This will be one of a number of Italian devotional works which we have grouped in an intimate chapel-like area alongside small Dutch panels—one an extraordinarily rare church interior by Pieter Saenredam, the other a reflective portrait of an old woman spinning flax by Adriaen van Ostade—which have a far more Protestant spiritual presence.

Exceptional provenance is an underlying theme for many paintings we are showing. Notably, the Portrait of a Scholar by the Monogrammist I.S. was acquired in the early 1750s by Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia and founder of the Imperial Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Van Ostade was owned in the nineteenth century by Baron Alphonse de Rothschild while the early Baburen Philosopher was almost certainly commissioned by Pietro Cussida, the Spanish envoy to Rome and a major collector.
