NICHOLAS HALL
17 East 76th Street, New York
9 – 18 May 2024
Nicholas Hall is delighted to present European Master Drawings from the Renaissance to the Twentieth Century—an exhibition organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art at the gallery’s space on 17 East 76th Street in New York. On view between 9-18 May 2024, the intimate presentation includes a varied and rarely seen selection of old and modern master drawings by artists ranging from Giuseppe Cesari and Gustave Courbet to George Grosz and Joan Miró. It is a preview of the first exhibition devoted to European works on paper at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 35 years, due to take place in Hartford, Connecticut between 16 January–27 April 2025.
Since 1844, the institution has acquired a diverse group of nearly 1,250 European sheets of impressive quality from the Renaissance onward. The collection has particularly strong examples from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Max Ernst; additionally celebrated are its theatrical designs, notably those linked with the Ballets Russes. The first catalogue devoted to European drawings at the Wadsworth Atheneum will be published in conjunction with the exhibition. This fully illustrated book will present fresh research on each object as well as on the history of collecting drawings at the museum. It will be written by Dr. Oliver Tostmann, Susan Morse Hilles Curator of European Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum, and published by Paul Holberton Publishing, London.
